Meet our Classes

Information and outline of work for the Autumn Term of 2011
Dear Parents,
Welcome back for the new school year.
This letter gives details of Year 6 routines and an outline of work for the forthcoming term. I hope that it answers any questions you may have.
Routines
- Homework is set every Friday and must be handed in by the following Tuesday. The children’s new Personal Organiser contains a space for you to make comments – please let us know if your child finds the homework too difficult or is taking too long to complete the homework.
- Most written homework will be completed in an A4 Homework Book or a Maths Homework Book – if this is not the case, your child will be informed and alternative instructions will be given.
- Spellings will normally be set on a Monday and tested on a Friday.
- Tables and Mental Maths tests will be on a Friday.
- Your child should bring in a pencil case containing the equipment they need for lessons each day.
- PE kit should be brought in on a Monday. At least one of this term’s PE lessons will be outdoor games, so children may wear tracksuit bottoms when the weather gets colder. Please ensure girls have a pair of socks for PE during cold weather, as tights are not suitable for PE. Watches and earrings must be removed for the lesson. Children can only be excused from PE if a note has been provided in advance.
- A painting overall is to be kept at school.
- Full school uniform must, of course, be worn unless otherwise stipulated.
- Please would you ensure that all of your child’s clothing and equipment is named.
- Please make sure that your child has his/her dinner money if a hot lunch is required.

OUTLINE OF WORK FOR THE AUTUMN TERM
Here are the curriculum areas which will be covered this term
English
The children will study a variety of text types including narrative and non-narrative. They will continue to use VCOP (Vocabulary, Openers, Connectives and Punctuation) to improve their writing, and will have regular Big Writing sessions. Drama will also be used to enhance speaking and listening skills and encourage good presentation work. They will also have grammar sessions to support their writing.
Children will be expected to keep a record of their reading in their personal organizers on a daily basis and have this signed by a parent / guardian at the weekend. This will then be checked by a member of staff in the week.
Maths
During the Autumn Term, the children will be covering the following:
*Place value (ordering and rounding), *using calculators, *mental calculation strategies, *pencil and paper procedures, *money and real life problems, *fractions decimals and percentages, *shape and space, *measures handling data, *properties and reasoning about numbers.
As part of our numeracy lessons, there will also be an emphasis on mental maths and tables, and children will be provided with “real life” problems, so as to convert their classroom knowledge to an understanding that can be used in everyday life.
Science.
Reversible and Irreversible changes and Changing Electrical Circuits – the children will be building on work covered in lower year groups to extend their understanding of practical applications.
RE.
We will continue to follow the London Diocesan Board for Schools’ “Every Child Matters to God” syllabus, with an emphasis on Sacraments and rites of passage.
Foundation Subjects
Our topic this term is Victorians. This topic will encompass many of the Foundation subjects (including History, Geography, DT and ICT) in a far more cross-curricular, natural and child-friendly manner. The topic is thoroughly planned, meaning that all of the relevant objectives and aims are covered, though not in clear-cut subject ‘boxes’. This is called the ‘Creative Learning Journey’ and is, in fact, far more like the topic-based work we all did at primary school. The main benefit is that children can see the relevance of their learning so that facts and skills acquired in one subject area can be transferred to others.
PE and PSHE
PE will include a variety of invasion games taught by Mr. O’Connor on Wednesdays and cricket with Mr. Dixon from Harefield Cricket Club on Mondays.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office to make an appointment to see me.
I look forward to meeting you at the curriculum and secondary transfer meeting on 27th September at 7pm.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Clarke
