Mrs. Henton, Mrs. Mills, Mr. Draper and Mr. Dale will be taking Year 6 children on School Journey to Wales from Monday 24th to Friday 28th May.
Routines
-
As usual, spellings will be issued on Monday and the children are required to learn the spellings and write 10 interesting sentences using the spelling words by Friday. Spelling lists are available to access on your child’s class page on Fronter.
-
Homework is issued on Fridays and is to be handed in on Tuesdays. There are usually two pieces of homework each week, typically one piece of English and a Maths exercise. Children are also expected to learn times tables for a test on Wednesdays. Homework is available to access on Fronter where appropriate.
-
Children should read for at least 20 minutes at home each day as this will support their work in all other subjects. We expect at least three reading responses per half term from each child – these can take different forms e.g. a review, a letter to a character, a prediction. By now, your child should have completed at least 12 reading responses.
-
PE: Year 5 and 6 PE is on Mondays and Wednesdays. Children should bring their PE kit on Monday and leave it in school for this term’s inter-house lunchtime competitions and in case of any changes to timetable.
Curriculum
This term we will be studying the topics of “Ancient Greece” and “London”, both of which link with the whole school theme of Europe. In order to enrich the children’s learning, we hope to take them on day trips to Ruislip Woods, The Museum of London and The Tate Modern Art Gallery but we will endeavour to keep costs to a minimum by using public transport wherever possible. More details will follow nearer the time.
SATs
Year 6 will be undergoing SATs tests in English and Maths during the week commencing 10th May. They will also have a Science assessment on the Friday of SATs week which will be marked internally. At the time of writing, we are not sure whether the English and Maths tests will be sent away to be marked or whether they will be marked internally.
Some important dates for your diary
-
On Friday 30th April, you are warmly invited to have a look at the wonderful Africa projects and Science big books produced by Year 5 and Year 6 children. These will be on display in the Hall before school from 8.30 am and after school from 3.15 to 3.45pm.
-
Our summer production, “The Button Box”, will be held on the evenings of Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th July.
Year 6 Secondary School Transition
After half term, we will be providing children with the opportunity to talk on a one-to-one basis to a member of school staff about their feelings/concerns to do with Secondary transfer. We would like to invite Year 6 parents to a drop-in session on Tuesday 18th May at 9pm to share more information with you about this process. Each child will produce Maths and English transition work which will be sent to their next school. We will also be holding a Personal Safety Conference for Y6 children on the Thursday before School Journey, and an Aspiration Week after half term. The purpose of our Aspiration Week is to provide your children with the opportunity to find out about the huge variety of careers and vocations that are available to them and enable them to meet professionals from a wide range of fields. We hope that the children will be able to see how their hard work and achievement at school links with making a positive difference to their local community and supports them to develop economic well-being and security in the future. Part of the week will include the opportunity to find out more about university, further study and professional learning. We want all of our children to aim high and transfer to secondary school with positive aspirations and goals that will ensure they continue to maintain the high levels of motivation and enthusiasm we see on a daily basis. Do you remember what you wanted to do at Primary School? If you are willing to help in any way or know someone who might we would love to hear from you.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any further information or if you feel it necessary, make an appointment to see us about anything more personal to your child.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. L Clarke
Mrs. M. Henton
Year 5 and Year 6 Trips, Autumn Term 2009
During the Autumn Term we really embraced outdoor learning in Year 5 and Year 6 with a variety of interesting activities. One very successful trip was to the Lea Quarry in Denham to find out about what goes on there – we even predicted and tested how much the whole class weighed when we stood on the weigh bridge. When we left the quarry we walked to the Floating Classroom and travelled up the Grand Union canal to the Quarry’s depot, following the route taken by the gravel barges.

We were very fortunate to be invited to visit the Mayor’s Parlour and Council Chambers in December. Not only did we learn about the history of the role of Mayor of Uxbridge, but we then got to sit in the Council Chamber and use the microphones to ask questions.

When we had left the Civic Centre, we headed straight for the outdoor ice rink, where everyone had a fun time skating, an activity we hope to repeat next year.

Thank you to all those parents who helped out, especially on the first visit to Lea Quarry when it poured with rain! |
