Geography

We expect every child to leave our school curious about the world around them and eager to continue exploring the natural world, both locally and globally. Through their learning in geography and the wider curriculum, pupils will understand their role as global citizens and be motivated to care for the planet and contribute positively to society.

Our Geography learning journey inspires pupils to become curious and explorative thinkers with a diverse knowledge of the world — in other words, to think like geographers. We aim to nurture a sense of wonder about the world, enabling pupils to understand the interaction between physical and human processes, and how these shape our landscapes and societies over time. Every unit of learning and each lesson is driven by a question to investigate, encouraging children to develop critical thinking and enquiry-based learning from an early age.

Geography is taught through a progressive and engaging curriculum that builds upon children’s prior knowledge and experiences. Our scheme of work places enquiry at the heart of every unit, following a fieldwork cycle of: question, observe, measure, record, and present. This cycle, embedded throughout all key stages, ensures children develop key geographical skills in a consistent and meaningful way. Fieldwork is a vital part of our approach, helping pupils explore their immediate environment as well as contrasting global locations such as The Alps and Shanghai. Learning is brought to life through map work, data collection, analysis, and real-world application, making cross-curricular links to global citizenship, science, and history.

Our pupils will leave with a strong understanding of the world around them, from local environments to global communities. They will be confident in using maps, conducting fieldwork, analysing data, and presenting findings clearly. Most importantly, they will see themselves as responsible, resourceful global citizens, with the skills and motivation to care for and positively influence the world they live in.
