Nursery - Acorns

Welcome to Nursery. Your child will take part in a range of learning activities, such as listening to stories, beginning to learn phonics, counting and measuring, singing and making music, drawing and painting, and PE, along with a lot of free play.

Your child will learn through a combination of child-led and adult-led activities. There are three specific types of learning:

  • Playing and exploring: investigating and experiencing things, and ‘having a go’
  • Active learning: concentrating and persevering if they encounter difficulties, and enjoying their achievements
  • Creating and thinking critically: developing their own ideas, making links between ideas, and developing strategies for doing things.

EYFS framework

EYFS means Early Years Foundation Stage. Your child is encouraged to access a range of learning opportunities throughout the day. In the Early Years Foundation Stage children learn best when they experience learning first hand, through meaningful interactions with others, through physical activity and through play. There are seven areas in the national Early Years Framework.

The three prime areas of learning:

  • Personal, social and emotional
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical

The four further areas of learning:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design
